Can One Heart Be More Beautiful Than Another?

A red heart enclosed in a metal cage, symbolizing the restriction of love and emotional openness. The cage is locked, casting shadows on a tiled floor, evoking a sense of confinement and withheld emotions.
This morning, I was in class with Mavis Karn and Nikon Gormley. Mavis was telling a story that was a perfect expression of her breathtaking compassion, and a thought came to me: “What a beautiful heart she has.” The thought that came a second later told me something else. “Wait a second, Isn’t that silly? How can one heart be more beautiful than another? They’re all made of exactly the same love.

The truth is, some hearts seem more beautiful than others, but only because they’re beating in the chests of people who understand they are a river of love, and know the best possible thing they can do is to let that love flow through them, unimpeded.

You’ve either experienced this unimpeded flow of this river of love in yourself, or have seen it in other people. The sensations that accompany the free flow of love tend to be awe, wonder, and gratitude. What better way could there be to feel fully human?

A smiling young girl with dark hair joyfully extends a red heart-shaped box toward the viewer, symbolizing the open and generous flow of love. The soft pink background enhances the warmth and kindness of the moment.

Contrast that to what it feels like when you hold back the river of love from yourself, or from others. We probably all know the sensations that bring forth a constricted, resentful, irritable resistance.

The single reason for the contrast is this: The open heart is functioning as it was intended to function, as a river of love, so it feels great. The closed heart is actually working against itself, so the sensations that accompany it feel horrible.

The beauty of this explanation is its simplicity, and it really and truly is that simple. If you let the river of love flow through you, you’ll feel wonderful. If you hold back or hold in the river of love, you’ll feel shitty.

What could possibly be better than knowing you were designed to be a river of love, and that simply letting that river flow will make you feel happy?
